How to Make a Good First Impression at a Job Interview

Interview make good impression tips

Whether you are planning on working abroad, or locally, or even online, it’s vital to make a good first impression.

Job interviews can really be decisive in helping companies to see who is right for the roles they are offering.

Firstly, you will need to make a great CV so you get the interview in the first place. With a strong application, the chances are you won’t even get an interview especially in the current competitive job market.

Here is some helpful advice and recommendations on how to make an amazing impression at a first job interview.

1. Research the Role and Company

Don’t come into an interview blind without any idea of who the company is, what they do and what is expected of you in the role advertised. Spend time preparing for the job interview in-advance. Read the brief, check their website, social media pages and also the company history.

2. Check Linkedin

There is no harm in checking Linkedin to see the person who is interviewing you. Read about their background, experience and any other interests. You might find you have similarities or things you think could demonstrate you would be a good team player.

3. Don’t Lie on Your Application

If you have any lies on your resume, for example, certifications and results or exaggerated previous experience/roles, and the company checks this in-advance, you could be put on the spot and caught out. Don’t risk it.

4. Practise Standard Questions

For a lot of job interviews employers sometimes ask similar questions. For example, why do you think you would be good at this role, what experience can you add, where do you see yourself in 5 years time, how do you cope in stressful situations etc. Having pre-prepared answers to these questions you won’t be put on the spot.

5. Dress Appropriately

Do you really want to be wearing a full formal suit if the role is for a new start up company? It’s always good to dress smart and make a good impression. View our tips how to buy a suit.

6. Get a Haircut

This might sound obvious, but whether you interview unperson or online, the first they will see if your face and what you are wearing. If you go into it looking all scruffy and messy, will this make a good impression? No. Get yourself looking in great shape

7. Be Happy and Positive

If you come across as approachable and friendly this will go a long way to improving your hiring prospects. Like who would want to hire, or work with something who came across as grump or miserable?!
