Cycling Tour Guide Role & What to Expect

Travel and tour operators hire staff all year round to lead groups on trips. Companies look to hire enthusiastic and experienced cycling tour leaders to work in various locations around Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America.

This is an exciting role, and there are positions with some of the most reputable travel companies in the world.

Locations:

You can find jobs all around the world, locally near to where you live and overseas. Some travel companies offer city sightseeing tours, others offer leisurely cycling group tours, whilst others offer epic long off the adventure beaten track tours. Whatever you interest, you will be able to find a position for you.

Details:

• Leaders usually have full responsibility for tour groups of around 12-18 customers
• Leaders are responsible for arranging tour logistics, leading daily walks/rides/skiing excursions, briefing
groups, following safety procedures and ensuring our customers have the best holiday possible
• Some tours are centre-based, while others are point-to-point
• Week-long tours typically have 5-6 walks/rides/skiing sessions, usually of a moderate activity level –
• Working periods are typically one to four weeks at a time, but we are looking for leaders who are prepared to commit to working regularly throughout the long European summer season (May-October)
• Leaders must be self-employed and be able to accept that work is dependent on tour departures being
guaranteed
• Accommodation and all meals are usually included whilst working
• Leaders are sometimes expected to work unsociable hours

Skills Required:

• Leadership and group management experience
• Excellent English language skills (both verbal and written)
• Good verbal language skills in Italian, Spanish, French or German
• Experience of leading in and good cultural knowledge of the relevant region
• Great communication abilities with people from different backgrounds and nationalities
• Excellent organisational and logistical skills
• Ability to handle and account for money
• Cycling leaders must be competent in this field and knowledgeable about bike mechanics
• Cross-country skiing leaders must have the ability to teach both skate and classic styles

Advantageous skills:
• PCV licence
• Current First Aid Qualification
• Mountain Leader or International Mountain Leader Qualification
